Olympian Scotty Lago to visit library Tuesday

Snowboarding champ Scotty Lago dazzled the nation in February at the Olympics half-pipe competition, where he earned a bronze metal that set his proud Seabrook hometown residents cheering.

On Tuesday at Seabrook Library, Lago will visit with local youngsters, telling stories of the Olympics, his training and his belief in setting goals and working to achieve them.

Lago, 22, who was born and raised in Seabrook, now lives in Hampton Falls in the first home he purchased. But during his Olympics interviews, Lago always expressed pride in his hometown and his appreciation for the support Seabrook and New Hampshire residents offered throughout his career.

Lago will bring his snowboarding gear, answer questions and sign autographs for local youth at the library when he visits.

The event is expected to be popular, and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis in the library meeting room.

For more information, contact Children's Librarian Lisa Michaud at 603-474-2044.

The seacoast region's kickoff of the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" event will be on Monday, Aug. 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at The Exeter Inn, 90 Front St., Exeter.

During the event, breast cancer survivors and local American Cancer Society volunteers will challenge the community to help make a difference in the fight against breast cancer by getting involved in the Making Strides of the greater seacoast event to be held on Oct. 17 at the Tuck Learning Center on the site of the old Exeter High School.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, 2.5-mile walk that unites thousands of women, men and children in the community to raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer while offering hope to all people facing the disease. Team captains and team members from all over the seacoast are encouraged to attend this event. Team captains can pick up their packets, and volunteers will be on hand to assist in online registrations, to answer questions, to be of assistance as needed.
