Sparhawk student performs at anti-bullying event

Newburyport Daily News

---- — AMESBURY — Cameron Roux, a seventh-grader at Sparhawk School, recently performed at “Stand Up to Bullying,” a program designed to educate, motivate and empower young people to promote social change in their schools and communities. The event was held Nov. 29 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

Michelle Roux, Cameron’s mother, described “The Stand Up to Bullying” event in a press release as an “incredible” day that included speakers who spoke of “how it’s OK to be different and to not let people get you down, and how beautiful everyone is.”

Cameron, of Atkinson, N.H., and his band, Poplert, performed their song, “I Don’t Deserve This,” about people joining the stand against bullying. The band is passionate about the issue and has performed at other anti-bullying events, including “Bullied to Silence.”

Sparhawk emphasizes a culture of kindness and encourages students to treat peers and adults with the kindness they deserve. School officials say Cameron’s involvement with anti-bullying events complements Sparhawk’s philosophy and they are proud of his participation in what they consider an important cause.

“As a parent of a Sparhawk student, all I ever see is a positive, safe environment for my child to learn in,” Michelle Roux said. “Everyone is kind and open to new ideas and the children are treated with respect no matter who they are, what they believe or how they look and dress.”
