---- — WEST NEWBURY — Permits for the 2013 burning season are now available at the Public Safety Complex Dispatch Center, 401 Main St. Cost for a permit for the season is $10. Residents using a burn permit must comply with the following rules:
Per state statute, burning may only occur Jan. 15 to May 1 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
A permit is valid only for the fire season mentioned. It is a violation of the law to use it for any other fires or dates.
Burning must take place at least 75 feet away from all dwellings.
Burning is for brush and branches only. Burning of leaves, trash and building materials is strictly prohibited.
Having a permit does not release the granted party any liability for damages.
The person setting the fire shall have sufficient help present to control it. The fire shall not be left unattended until entirely extinguished.
The permit shall be shown to anyone who requests it.
In case of heavy wind, adverse weather conditions or otherwise dangerous conditions, the permit is invalid as provided by law.
The fire may not constitute a nuisance.
The fire must be started with smoke-minimizing starters if starters or starting aids are used.
The fire will be totally extinguished before 4 p.m.
Permit holders must call the West Newbury Fire Department (978 363-1111) each day they wish to burn and request permission to burn. The dispatcher will inform them of the permission to burn status for the day, request their name and their permit number.
The West Newbury Fire Department may revoke a burn permit at any time.
