Crash nearly sends car plunging into icy stream

WEST NEWBURY — A local teen is lucky to be in one piece after crashing his Honda Accord yesterday into a section of steel guardrail along Middle Street and almost sliding into an icy cold creek below, according to local police.

Nicholas Soter, 17, of Baileys Lane, was issued a speeding citation following the Wednesday morning crash that tore up about 15 feet of guardrail near the T Bridge before coming to a stop perilously close to the lip of the roughly 8-foot deep body of water. Soter was not injured.

“He would have had hypothermia in two or three minutes,” officer Richard Merrill Jr. said.

Work crews were out almost immediately following the crash to replace the damaged guardrail. Assisting Merrill in the investigation is officer Sean O’Keefe.
