---- — NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Affordable Housing Trust and the Office of Planning & Development are unveiling their new Housing Production Plan. The plan identifies goals, objectives and implementation strategies focused on how to provide safe, clean and efficient affordable housing opportunities to the citizens of Newburyport.
Families, individuals and children are struggling as the slow-to-recover economy, poor job market and a consistently high housing market here makes finding a home difficult, if not nearly impossible. The Housing Production Plan, created in a joint effort between the city and the Affordable Housing Trust, will serve as a guidance document on policy issues regarding all types of housing, from opportunities to house the homeless as well as opportunities for working families and individuals struggling to make ends meet and the lack of housing that is affordable to them.
The plan will identify priority housing needs and suggest how to best allocate resources for the production of new affordable and workforce housing.
Mayor Donna Holaday, also a member of the trust, said in a press release, “This plan will go a long way in guiding the representatives, volunteers and private citizens of Newburyport in the creation of affordable, community housing. It provides specific timelines, goals and strategies that, when implemented, will result in a variety of housing options to meet the needs of all of Newburyport’s residents. The recently released homelessness numbers are chilling, but with the strategies outlined in this plan, Newburyport can begin to make a real difference.”
Over a year in the making, the process to create the Housing Production Plan is nearing its end. The Affordable Housing Trust will be hosting a public meeting to unveil the nearly finished plan at the Newburyport Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Citizens are encouraged to attend the meeting to learn about the plan and offer their comments and suggestions before the plan is finalized.
