New exhibit advisor hired at Merrimac Library

Newburyport Daily News

---- — MERRIMAC — To provide more opportunities for local artists to show their work, as well as more viewing pleasure for patrons, the Trustees of the Merrimac Library created the position of exhibit advisor, a position made possible by donations from local businesses, the Merrimac Cultural Council and the Friends of the Library.

Experienced teacher and gallery director, local artist and Merrimac resident Nancy Philo will now organize and orchestrate exhibitions displayed in the library.

In this role, Philo will curate and rotate displays such as art shows, featured books and various collections throughout the library to create ambience in the space.

Philo has dedicated her life to art, according to a press release. Her teaching career started locally more than 20 years ago at Essex Art Center in Lawrence, Amesbury High School and as Art Department head at St. Mary’s and Central Catholic high schools. She left instruction to open her own fine art gallery, Hyperbole, in Newburyport and helped found the Newburyport Gallery Owner’s Association, where she served as president.

She has recently returned to the area to be with family and friends after working for nine years in galleries in New Mexico, where she also earned a month-long painting residency. She is a member of the Newburyport Art Association.

The first show Philo is exhibiting at the library will showcase her own paintings in both the main part of the library and the community room. Her work can also be viewed at Chococoa in the Tannery in Newburyport. Her paintings are a part of both pubic and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, which houses a drawing of hers that appeared on a magazine cover.
