Ice fishing tournament grounded

NEWBURYPORT — It’s official. The Essex County Sportsmen’s Association won’t be welcoming anglers to its annual ice fishing tournament this year.

Keith Stanwood said the weather just hasn’t cooperated to allow what is typically one of his group’s largest fundraisers of the year to go off.

The tournament, held on the Artichoke Reservoir, was originally scheduled for Feb. 3. Unseasonable weather then postponed it until Feb. 10, and again to Feb. 24.

But Stanwood said yesterday that the reservoir isn’t completely frozen and the ice conditions are just too unsafe to support the tournament.

“Mother Nature got us,” he said.

He said the sportsmen are tossing around the idea of possibly holding an open water tournament in June during the state’s free fishing day, but no plans have been finalized.

He encouraged people to check the association’s website at www.ecsainc.org to keep updated on the latest developments.
