AMESBURY — Amesbury's educators are looking for public input on the adult education courses that will be offered for the spring semester at Amesbury High School.
Adult education is set to make its comeback at Amesbury High next month. Its return comes after evening courses were interrupted by construction at the high school. Now that the building is complete, Maggie Furlong, who spearheaded the efforts to bring the night classes back, and the School Committee are ready to see community members returning to the high school and are hoping to offer courses the public is excited to enroll in.
"One of our school district's goals is to create lifelong learners, and this is a great way to bring the community back into the school buildings they own," Furlong has said of the program.
Right now, Amesbury's website, www.amesburyma.gov, has a posted link to an online survey with questions about which courses should be offered and what price people are willing to pay for those courses. The results of the survey will be used to determine the courses offered for the spring semester. Nothing is set in stone, but currently the options are sewing, guitar playing, technology and meteorology.
An interest on the part of potential students is important, as classes have to meet a minimum number of enrolled learners to avoid getting the ax.
The winter courses are slated to kick off in January and have already been selected. The offerings, which consist of classes on Web design, knitting, photo modification and cooking are all taught by Amesbury educators. Most are priced in the $50 range and meet once a week for a few weeks. The courses were chosen based on what has worked best at other school districts.
Adult education class information and the registration forms needed to enroll can be found online at www.amesburyma.gov. The deadline for registration for courses beginning in January is Dec. 31.
