WEST NEWBURY — Looking to cure the winter doldrums? Why not spend an afternoon grooving to smooth jazz and sipping your favorite beverage in an intimate location with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean?
The award-winning Pentucket High School Jazz Combo teams up with Blue Ocean Music Hall at the Pavilion on Salisbury Beach on Jan. 29 to provide an inviting respite from the harsher realities of the season.
The combo is offering a 90-minute set featuring the work of jazz greats like Charles Mingus, Dave Holland, Ornette Coleman and Wayne Shorter. A portion of John Coltrane's masterpiece "A Love Supreme" is also on the play-list.
The event is a fundraiser to support a trip to New York City for the young musicians to attend the annual three-day Mingus Competition, where they'll participate in master classes, workshops, jam sessions and concerts, sponsored by the Manhattan School of Music.
Owners of the Blue Ocean donated the space for the fundraiser, ensuring that 100 percent of ticket sales will be used to offset costs for the $3,000 trip. Tickets are $15 at the door or make a reservation at pentucketjazzcombo@gmail.com.
The show starts at 1 p.m. at Blue Ocean Music Hall, 4 Oceanfront North, in Salisbury (www.blueoceanhall.com). Sea Glass, Blue Ocean's sister restaurant next door, will be serving brunch between 10:30 and 1 p.m. for those who want to make a day of it. A cash bar is available during the event.
Please make checks for tickets or donations payable to: Pentucket Jazz Combo, c/o Kimball Tarr, 16 Harriman Road, Merrimac, MA 01860.
