Andreas named regional publisher

NORTH ANDOVER — The Eagle-Tribune Publishing Co. yesterday announced a reorganization of its executive structure, promoting Karen Andreas to regional publisher of the company’s newspapers, websites and magazines.

Andreas, 46, publisher of the Salem News for more than five years, will continue to oversee that daily in her new position as well as The Newburyport Daily News, The Eagle-Tribune of North Andover and the Gloucester Daily Times.

She will also serve as publisher of the weekly Andover Townsman, Haverhill Gazette, Derry, N.H., News and the Carriage Towne News of Kingston, N.H. The company also publishes several magazines in its newspaper markets.

Mark Zappala, 47, publisher of the Gloucester Daily Times, becomes regional advertising director for Eagle-Tribune Publishing. Al Getler, former publisher of The Eagle-Tribune, and Sheila Smith, former publisher of The Newburyport Daily News, are no longer with the company.

Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., parent corporation of Eagle-Tribune Publishing, said the reorganization is designed to refine the structure of its Massachusetts and New Hampshire properties to align them with the strategic print and digital objectives of the company in the north of Boston market.

Andreas is a 25-year veteran of the newspaper industry and a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. She is a former executive editor and vice president of news for Eagle-Tribune Publishing.

“Karen is an award-winning journalist who possesses all of the right skills to lead this company,” said Henry Bird, senior vice president of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. “Karen has a track record of success. She is a proven leader with the rare combination of talent, creativity and intelligence to meet the needs of the communities we serve.”

Andreas, who lives in Danvers with her husband, Mike, and teen-age sons Nick and Matt, welcomed her expanded responsibilities.
