Ceremony to honor Lawler for service to community

NEWBURYPORT — Members of the Board of Water Commissioners are planning to honor the late George Lawler with a plaque and a ceremony this spring.

Lawler was the chairman of the commission when he died recently.

Commission members said he had served the city well for many years, including tenures as mayor and city councilor.

“We had made plans to honor him before he passed,” said Erford Fowler, a member of the commission. “It’s too bad he couldn’t be here to receive the honor.”

Commission members are planning a ceremony, perhaps in May, to dedicate the plaque and honor Lawler’s memory. The plaque will likely be placed near the Water Department offices on Spring Lane, members said.
