Dentist's 'Giving Back' day broadens within community

NEWBURY — A local dentist is once again partnering with the Council on Aging to provide seniors with free dental care. And several other businesses and organizations are joining what is evolving into an annual event.

Hosted by Dr. Robin Davies of Parker River Dental, “Giving Back to the Community Day” will be held this year on Saturday, April 13. Seniors who sign up for an appointment that day through the Council on Aging office receive a complementary comprehensive dental exam, dental cleaning, digital X-rays, and oral care products.

Davies, who believes regular dental care is essential to an individual’s overall health and well-being, began offering a day of free services to local elderly who have no dental insurance two years ago at her office at 3 Kent Way, Byfield. She and her staff can service up to 12 patients between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on that day, but Davies has said she will offer a second day this year if more people are interested in an appointment.

Originally from Maine, Davies has lived in Byfield since 1992. She received her undergraduate degree in dental hygiene from Westbrook College (now the University of New England) in Maine and her doctorate of dentistry summa cum laude from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston.

The annual event is sparking a generous response from others working in the area. For Davies and her staff, seeing their “Giving Back to the Community Day” blossom in this way has been its own reward.

Vivian Flowers on Main Street donates blooms for each Community Day guest and Kim Gregory of Pure Pastry provides healthy treats for participants.

After last year’s Community Day, the Newburyport Society for the Relief of Aged Women contacted Davies about a financial aid program it offers that could meet the dental needs of some of her patients throughout the year.
