West Newbury to begin spring hydrant flushing

WEST NEWBURY — The West Newbury Water Department will begin its spring hydrant flushing on Saturday night.

The process will start at 10 p.m. with hydrants in the area of Pentucket Regional High School and along Main Street from the Groveland town line to the Newburyport town line. Flushing will continue through 5 a.m. Sunday.

Flushing will commence on secondary roads on Monday, April 8, and continue through Friday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

On Wednesday, April 10, the Water Department will be flushing hydrants in conjunction with the Fire Department on Whetstone Street and Sullivan’s Court beginning at 6:30 p.m.

On Sunday, April 14, the department will be flushing hydrants in conjunction with the Fire Department on Church Street, Old Wharf Road, Prospect Street, Steed Avenue and Bridge Street beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Hydrant flushing will cause water to become discolored as sediment is removed from the system. Property owners may experience intervals of low water pressure as well.

Residents are advised to run the cold water before doing laundry to make sure it runs clear. People should try to avoid using bleach whenever possible as it will cause the iron and manganese to permanently stain clothes. If rust does stain clothing, people should not machine dry the items. A product called Iron Out that will help take stains out during washing is available at the Water Department office.

Officials recommend that homeowners refrain from washing laundry altogether after 9 p.m. this Saturday through Sunday morning. Starting on Monday, residents should plan on washing laundry only during the evening hours when flushing is not scheduled and continue to wash laundry in the evenings through April 19 when flushing will be completed.
