Amesbury Democrats hosting platform hearing

AMESBURY — Amesbury Democrats are inviting Democrats from the area to testify at a platform hearing at on Saturday, March 23, at 10 a.m. at Amesbury City Hall Auditorium, 62 Friend St.

Any interested Democrat can testify and submit testimony that will be used in helping to determine the next Party Platform for the Massachusetts Democratic Party. The platform will ultimately be adopted at the 2013 State Convention on Saturday, July 13, at Tsongas Arena in Lowell.

Over the next few months, the Platform Committee will be compiling a draft platform with the following sections: Education, Healthcare and Human Services, Labor, Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, Transportation and Infrastructure, Public Safety and Crime Prevention, Revenue and Expenditures, Ethics and Transparency, Justice and Civil Rights, Voting and Democracy, Business and Entrepreneurship.

Mayor Thatcher Kezer is a member of the Platform Drafting Committee and will help facilitate the hearing, said Rebecca Jordan, chairwoman of the Amesbury Democratic Committee. She said Democrats who are interested in having a voice in formulating the party’s platform are encouraged to attend.

“Our platform is a set of values and a statement of what we believe as Democrats,” said Mayor Setti Warren of Newton, who is chairman of the Democratic Party’s Platform Committee. “Over the course of the next months, the Platform Committee will participate in an open and transparent process to gather those values and beliefs into a single document.”
