---- — GEORGETOWN — The public is invited to attend Coffee with Stephen Puleo on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Georgetown Peabody Library. The cost is $12 per person or two for $20.
The event is a fundraiser for the American Association of University Women and The Friends of the Georgetown Peabody Library. Puleo will discuss his latest book, “The Caning,” in which he tells the story of the shocking event on May 22, 1856, when pro-slavery Congressman Preston S. Brooks of South Carolina strode into the United States Senate Chamber and began beating anti-slavery Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, with a gold-topped walking cane, rendering him unconscious. That act drove the final wedge between pro- and anti-slavery forces.
Puleo’s books will be available for purchase and will be signed by him.
Refreshments will be served at the coffee, including homemade baked goods, fruit, coffee, tea and juice.
AAUW’s share of the profit will be for a scholarship that the local branches give to a woman student at one of the local colleges to attend the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders.
The Friends of the Georgetown Peabody Library use their profit to buy museum passes and for other community events.
