SEABROOK — Sixth-grader Dylan Colpitts is the newest New Hampshire state youth wrestling champ, after defeating all opponents in his weight class at the state tournament held in Litchfield, N.H., on Sunday.
According to Seabrook Middle School Wrestling Team spokeswoman Betsey Ross, Colpitts worked his way through the 134-pound division, going undefeated in each of his matches using hard work and a no-nonsense attitude to bringing home the first-place trophy.
Eight members of Seabrook Middle School arose at 5 a.m. on Sunday to participate in the N.H. State Youth Wrestling Tournament. Four Seabrook wrestlers worked their way through their weight brackets and brought home a trophy and medals, as well.
The sixth-graders put on "gutsy performances," Ross said, participating in a 17-hour marathon of wrestling, and placed in the top four of New Hampshire's young wrestlers. Along with Colpitts, they were: Jaden Lesperance, with a second-place finish in his weight class; Mike Dow, third in his class; and Robbie Maclean, fourth in his class.
An interesting match took place between close friends Dow and Maclean, who wrestled each other in their final match to take third and fourth places.
With their solid placements in Sunday's state tournament, these four wrestlers qualified to compete in the Youth New England Wrestling Championship to be held in Nashua, N.H., the weekend of March 10 and 11.
"What a day," said wrestling coach Jim Deshaies, who is also the school resource officer. "Five mats all running at once, 400 wrestlers all over the place, but our kids kept their concentration and were able to finish high in the state rankings. My goals as a coach are to teach the basics of wrestling, to have respect for their opponents and referees and to represent our school with dignity and good manners. And, perhaps, they will win a few matches along the way. I couldn't be prouder."
Four other Seabrook wrestlers competed in the tournament: team captain Joey Stevenson, Tommy Greene, Marcus Belmer and Michael Brown. Stevenson led his team with words of encouragement throughout the day.
