Rowley Girl Scouts strive for Silver Award

ROWLEY — Several local Girl Scout Cadettes are working this spring to complete community service projects on the road to the Silver Award, the highest award they can earn.

Over April school vacation week, Triton Middle School eighth-grader Madeleine Schmuch completed her final three art workshops at Rowley Public Library. A Girl Scout Cadette from Rowley Troop 60617, Madeleine held six art workshops during February and April school vacations. She was responsible for organizing the workshops, recruiting helpers, gathering materials and more, working closely with Hermayne Gordon, Rowley Library's associate for youth services. Madeleine led children in making sleeping bags, beds and accessories for their favorite stuffed animals; frames and mosaic pictures; and crafts made entirely from recycled items.

Rowley seventh-grader Allyson Toppi is organizing a Bike Safety Day on Tuesday, May 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pine Grove School in Rowley. Allyson is a member of Rowley Cadette Troop 60220 and planned her event to coincide with Pine Grove Ice Cream Social, held on election day. The fun, educational event is designed to educate young cyclists about the safety aspects of riding a bicycle on streets, and will feature obstacle courses and other bike activities for children. A Rowley police officer will be on hand to check proper bike helmet fitting for the kids, as well as answer questions about bike safety. Allyson also is hoping to have a local bike shop there to do quick checks on children's bikes for maintenance issues. Handouts with safety tips will be available for families to take home.

Girl Scout Cadette Kiersten Flodman is planning a Girl Scout Silver Award Musical Benefit on Sunday, June 5, at 4 p.m. at Emerson Center, Fellowship Hall, at Congregational Church of Topsfield. A member of Rowley Troop 60220 and an eighth-grader at Triton Middle School, Kiersten wanted to find a way to help impoverished families with newborn babies at Beverly Hospital. Admission to the concert, which she organized with local musicians, will be a new, donated baby item, such as an infant car seat, receiving blanket, bibs, newborn and preemie pajamas, bouncy seats, sleep sacks, newborn socks, mittens, newborn onesies and newborn and preemie outfits. Light refreshments will follow the concert.

Triton Middle School eighth-grader Amanda Rotberg is organizing Animal Day in Rowley at Rowley Town Common on Saturday, June 11, from noon to 3 p.m. A member of Cadette Troop 60617, Amanda loves animals and planned a Silver Award project to recognize the special pets in her life. The event will highlight the variety of services available in the area, such as grooming, kennel and more. Information on the many animals available for adoption will also be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of new animal supplies for Nevins Farm in Methuen. Well-behaved, leashed pets are also welcome.

Other local Girl Scouts are planning Silver Award events over the summer.

Pursuing the Silver Award allows girls the chance to show they are leaders who are organized, determined and dedicated to improving their communities. Girl Scout Cadettes, which include girls in sixth, seventh and eighth grades, must fulfill rigorous badge requirements, then undertake a 40- to 50-hour community service project of their own design.
