Candidates forum, water/sewer meeting both tonight

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — Forums focusing on the Nov. 5 municipal election and the troubled water and sewer system to Plum Island will be held tonight.

A meeting of the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority slated for tonight has been postponed because these events are taking place.

Candidates for at-large positions on the City Council will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Newburyport High School.

The event is being organized by The Daily News, the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the high school.

Nine candidates for five positions have been invited.

Scheduled for 7 p.m. at PITA Hall on Plum Island in Newbury is a briefing by Mayor Donna Holaday on the status of the water and sewer system.

City officials have indicated there are serious problems in the water line, but Holaday has expressed a reluctance to discuss it due to her concern that disclosures might weaken the city’s case should there be litigation.

Some residents of Newburyport and Newbury, which share the water and sewer lines, have expressed their interest in knowing the facts of the matter.

Holaday has said the city has retained a private law firm to help it correct the problem. Litigation of both a criminal and civil nature is possible, municipal leaders say.
