Town officials will soon be displaying a plaque received from the state's Department of Environmental Services. DES gave Seabrook's Water and Sewer Advisory Committee and Chairwoman Susan Foote its Water Protection Award, which will be displayed at the nearly completed water treatment plant.
The committee worked for years to analyze the town's water needs and systems, then recommended that residents approve installing water meters into every home. The effort required considerable public education and approval from Town Meeting, something DES acknowledged was a difficult feat.
"I don't think people realize what a big job that was," Selectman Bob Moore said.
Since the installation of water meters, Seabrook has consumed considerably less water, daily and annually, than before, which was the aim of the meter program, Seabrook Water Supervisor Curtis Slayton said. The town also has been able to eliminate repeated outdoor water bans.
In addition, DES has worked cooperatively with the town on a variety of projects, including the building of the town's water treatment plant, which is slated to be on line by January, Slayton said.
Another water project that was completed recently was the townwide hydrant flushing, Slayton said. Town crews spent nine nights flushing the town's 55 miles of water mains, using 4.3 million gallons of water.
The effort was to remove the iron and manganese sediment that have settled at the bottom of water mains in the past two years since the last flushing.

Friends of the late Linda Doyle are holding a fundraiser on Saturday, June 19, in an effort to help Doyle's family pay for the medical expenses incurred during her recent battle with pancreatic cancer. Although Doyle lost her fight with the deadly disease on May 31, money raised at the event will be donated to her family to deal with medical bills, according to friend Tawnya Hazell.
The event takes place from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Lafayette Club in Amesbury. The fun night is meant for those 21 and older and includes a performance by R-rated hypnotist Frank Santos Jr., a disc jockey and an array of raffle prizes, including a stay at the Samoset resort in Rockport, Maine, and gift certificates to area favorites like Ron Jillian's, Quicksilver, Memories Photography Studio, Harley-Davidson, Hampton Beach Casino tickets and much more.
Tickets for the event are $20 per person and are being sold at Newbury North Salon in North Hampton and Ron Jillian's Restaurant in Hampton.
