---- — NEWBURYPORT — The following Newburyport Adult and Community Education classes are scheduled for this summer:
Boating Safety — U.S. Coast Guard Certified. Joseph Amore, public education officer, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, is offering a class for boating enthusiasts ages 16-plus. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary safe boating certificate that is recognized by all states that require safe boating education prior to operation of a vessel. Boat owners/captains/crew need to understand the boating rules as well as safety requirements including understanding safety equipment. Four, 2-hour sessions: Mondays 6:30-8:30 p.m. Begins July 8/Cost $100. Class to be held at the Newburyport Public Library
Botanical Drawing — Professional artist/illustrator Elizabeth Rush will run this class designed as a pleasurable venture into drawing botanical subjects for adults with varying skill levels. The course will include exploring botanical art past and present, drawing demonstrations and identifying the basics of flower/plant anatomy. Participants should bring the following materials: A range of drawing pencils from soft to hard: 4H, HB, 6B, two erasers: one kneaded, one white vinyl, 11-by-14-inch sketch pad. Optional materials include colored pencils, pen and ink, fine line markers. Four, 2-hour sessions: Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to noon. Begins July 16. Cost $125. Location: TBA
En Plein Air Workshop — Join artist Susan Spellman for a morning of painting on the Newburyport waterfront. Susan will discuss the process of tackling the visual overload of painting outside “en plein air.” An initial oil painting demo will be followed by instruction geared to help you complete a painting in one session. Meet in front of the Black Cow Restaurant. Instructor will provide a materials list upon registration. One, 3-hour session: Saturday, 9 a.m.–noon. July 21. Cost $75. Class limit: 8.
Fun French at the Grog — Anne Frederique McCoy offers this class for those who want to have fun with the language, but may be less eager to learn all the mechanics. The class is designed for students with some knowledge of French, and would be helpful for people planning a trip to France. If this sounds like fun to you, this will be your own alliance Française! Parlez for the pure pleasure of it. Purchase and bring to the first class the book entitled “Communicating in French, Novice/Elementary Level” by Conrad J. Schmitt, Ed. Schaum’s Foreign Language Series. Four, 2-hour sessions: Thursdays, 7-9 p.m. Begins: July 18. Class meets at the Grog, 11 Middle St., Newburyport. Cost: $125. Class limit: 10.
Fun Spanish at the Grog — Kim Kudym offers this class for those who want to have fun with the language, but may be less eager to learn all the mechanics. This class is designed for students with some knowledge of Spanish who would like to continue to develop proficiency. There is no text, as conversations and discussions will be based on short readings and other topics as the needs and interests of the group emerge. Bring a notebook. Wine is optional! Four, 2-hour sessions: Tuesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Begins July 9. Cost $125. Class meets at the Grog, 11 Middle St., Newburyport. Cost: $175.
Basic Genealogy — Lisa Powis has spent many an hour delving into her own and other’s family history. Have you ever wondered where your grandparents met? Have you wondered what your children will remember about your family once you are gone? Basic Genealogy 101 will help you research family history to answer these questions and produce a final product to pass on to your descendants. Four weeks, Wednesdays, July 3-July 31. 1-3 p.m. at Newburyport Public Library. Cost $125.
Getting Started as a Writer — Alfred Nicol will lead the class especially designed for those who have always wanted to write but got side-tracked along the way. The class will include exercises along with discussion and one-on-one review. There will be an emphasis on discovering voice, style and syntax. Four, 2-hour sessions: Mondays, 10 a.m.-noon. Begins: July 8-July 29 at Newburyport Public Library. Cost: $125.
Historic Walking Tours of Newburyport — Anne Dodge, fourth generation Newburyporter, will cover the history and ground that includes Colonial Newburyport, the importance of the Merrimack River, abolitionists, religion in early New England, major historic sites and historical/ hysterical personages. One, 2-hour session, Sunday morning, 9-11 a.m., July 14 or July 28 (during Yankee Homecoming). Meet on the waterfront, by the Black Cow Restaurant. Cost: $10.
Improve Your Online Dating Chances — Dating coach Steve Penner has reviewed thousands of online profiles during his work as a consultant and matchmaker for eHarmony.com. In this interactive workshop, Steve will reveal the secrets of how to play the online dating game and will help class participants understand their dating quotient, meaning how the language of your presentation translates into results. Learning some tips on appealing/off-putting presentations. Steve’s been around the online dating scene—come see what he’s got to say. Mosaics for Home or Garden — Join mosaic and stained glass artist Leslie Doherty as she offers students the opportunity to learn the fine art form of glass mosaics. Make a piece of art for your home or garden or a special gift for someone. Participants can choose to complete a large tile trivet, a large plaque or garden stepping stone in one class session. One of the two sessions invites adults to register with a child (aged 10-plus) for the class. One 2.5-hour session: Adults: Monday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., cost $55. $25 material fee paid to teacher. Adult and child: Thursday, Aug. 8, 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m., cost $75. $40 materials fee to be paid to teacher. Location: Potlatch Studio, 34 Pond St., Amesbury. Cost $55.
The New Aging — for Boomers & Beyond— Angelena Craig leads this four-week workshop and will examine with you the question on all of our minds—how do we stay young, while growing older? In this interactive workshop, each session will focus on topics such as stress, sleep, nuitrition, aging attitudes and exercise. There is also be a sit down and move component, combining yoga breathing, gentle stretches and dance, all while in the chair. Four, 2-hour sessions: Tuesdays 10 a.m.-noon. Begins July 9. Cost: $125. The Great Poetry Escape — Invest in a weekend and leave a better poet. You may even discover some new poet friends with whom you can continue to share your work and your writing challenges. One and a half days, beginning at 9:30-12:30 Saturday morning (includes coffee), lunch break (brown bag or off site). Class resumes at 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday reading brunch—potluck, bring a dish and a poem for sharing. 9:30–11:30. Runs: July 20-21. Cost $100. Sea Glass Jewelry Workshops— Lisa Scala, designer and teacher of 20 years, offers these workshops in wired jewelry with sea glass, including making a contemporary charm bracelet, spiral earrings, a cluster ring or a sea glass pendant. Learn basic to intermediate jewelry making and go home with a piece of jewelry each week. The class is a great addition to anyone who has taken beginner classes but will also be fine for those wanting to get started for the first time in jewelry making. Four, 2-hour sessions: Thursday evenings, 6:30-8:30 p.m., begins July 12. Cost $125. Materials fee to be paid to teacher, $20.
Yoga for 50-plus —Rose Russo, RYT-200, Anusara inspired TM yoga instructor, has designed a beginner class that will gently stretch and strengthen all major muscles and joints. Emphasis will be on working with your body, wherever it is. Participants will learn deep breathing techniques for quieting the mind and yoga therapy exercises designed to open the body. Each class will begin with a short meditation and end with a final relaxation. Four, 1-hour sessions: Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Begins July 9, Yoga Center of Newburyport, 12 Maple St., Newburyport.
