Number of candidates in at-large race rises

---- — NEWBURYPORT — The total number of candidates who have taken out papers for the position of at-large councilor has risen to eight, according to city officials. Five will be elected.

Eleven have taken out papers for six ward seats, and there are four candidates for mayor.

Municipal leaders say there are only two aspirants for School Committee, Daniel Coen and Cheryl Sweeney. There are three seats open.

Those showing interest in the at-large position (based on when they took out papers) are incumbent Barry Connell of 36 Woodland St.; Joanne McCarthy, 158 Crow Lane; Bruce Vogel, 28 Myrtle Ave.; Bruce Menin, 84 Lime St.; incumbent Ed Cameron, 17 Oakland St.; Meghan Kinsey, 1 Griffin Court; incumbent Ari Herzog, 15 Prospect St.; and Laurel Allgrove, 22 Beacon Ave.

For wards, the following have taken out papers: Ward 1, Michael Ferrick, 8 Browfield Court, and incumbent Allison Heartquist, 23 Reservation Terrace; Ward 2, Christopher Welch, 33 Federal St., and Jared Eigerman, 83 High St.; Ward 3, incumbent Robert Cronin, 126 Merrimac St., and Leslie Eckholdt, 36 Warren St.; Ward 4, incumbent Tom Jones, 130 Low St., and Sean McDonald, 9 Farrell St.; Ward 5, Larry Giunta Jr., 139 Crow Lane, and Sean Reardon, 1 Cutting Drive; and Ward 6, incumbent Tom O’Brien, 11 Moseley Ave.

The primary election is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 17. Final election is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Four have announced they are running for mayor: City Councilor Richard Sullivan Jr., City Councilor Greg Earls, newcomer Keith Kennedy and Mayor Donna Holaday.

Sullivan and Earls have returned their nomination papers.
