Lawrence man charged with pushing woman from car on I-495

MERRIMAC — State police have arrested and charged a Lawrence man with pushing a woman from a moving car on Interstate 495 Sunday afternoon.

Moises Matos, 43, faces charges of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery. The alleged victim, Glenda Rivera, 37, remains in serious condition at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

Trooper Scott Grimes of the Newbury state police barracks arrested Matos in Lawrence at 7:30 a.m. yesterday after investigating the incident. Matos was held without bail pending his arraignment in Newburyport District Court this morning, according to Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Matos’ brother, Henry Matos, 45, also of Lawrence, was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and unlicensed operation after he was stopped on I-495 by state police Lt. Allan Zani. Numerous people called the Newbury barracks to report a woman had been pushed or jumped from a moving car on the northbound side of Interstate 495 in Merrimac.

An off-duty Somerville police officer, Sgt. John Marino, followed that car, a Volkswagen that was being driven by Henry Matos — and in which Moises Matos was a passenger, according to state police. Marino kept troopers informed of the vehicle’s whereabouts, state police said.

While Henry Matos was arrested, Moises Matos was not initially charged with anything but was placed in protective custody. Both Matoses had a strong odor of alcohol, according to Grimes’ report. Henry Matos refused to take a Breathalyzer exam, but his brother did submit to that test and had a blood alcohol level of .232, nearly three times the .08 threshold at which a person is presumed to be intoxicated, Grimes wrote.

Henry Matos pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Newburyport District Court on Monday. Judge Peter Doyle revoked his bail on other unrelated charges and continued his case until July 9.
