NRA to unveil latest plans at Saturday meeting

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — Newburyport residents are invited down to the waterfront Saturday morning to glimpse the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority’s concept for its two waterfront lots.

The concept, drawn up by architect Donald Powers of Union Studios, incorporates feedback collected by the Redevelopment Authority and city officials over the past nine months. Powers will present a detailed view during a presentation — including a virtual walk-through of the site — at the Firehouse starting at 9 a.m.

Following Powers’ presentation, residents will be encouraged to walk the lots to see the plans for the expanded park and potential buildings outlined in the concept. NRA and city officials will be on hand to answer questions and hear comments.

The goal of the project is to replace the current dirt parking lots with an expanded park along the river as well as shops and restaurants that will connect downtown Newburyport’s year-round vitality to the waterfront. The plan also extends the existing downtown neighborhood to the waterfront, with roughly two dozen residences included in the project.

In addition, the financial objective of the project is to generate the money necessary to expand the park and to maintain it, at no cost to the city.

The discussion and site walk represents the latest public outreach by the NRA and Mayor Donna Holaday. This concept will be used to help draw up a request for proposals, which is expected to be released in the fall.
