Eggs will drop from the skies today in Amesbury

Fundraiser planned at sports park

AMESBURY – Candy and Easter cheer will rain from the skies today as Lucy’s Love Bus kicks off its first annual Helicopter Egg Drop Palooza.

The Easter celebration is set to begin today at 11 a.m. at the Amesbury Sports Park, and the highlight of the day will be when 30,000 Easter eggs are dropped from a helicopter as kids of all ages spread out for a giant Easter egg hunt.

“They’re little plastic eggs, some of them have candy inside, some have a coloring page, others stickers, it depends on the age group,” said Signe Frick, an 18-year-old Amesbury resident and Teen Leader for Lucy’s Love Bus. “We have personally stuffed tons and tons and tons of eggs, so it’s a nice whole mix of things.”

Lucy’s Love Bus is the vision of Lucy Grogan, an Amesbury girl who passed away in 2006 after a four-year battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Grogan, who was 8-years-old at the time of her death, found comfort from integrated therapies like massages and acupuncture and came up with the idea of a nonprofit that would help fund similar therapies for other pediatric cancer patients, since such treatments aren’t covered by health insurance.

The group has raised thousands of dollars to date, and the Egg Drop is already looking to be a fantastic success.

“We’re so excited, we sold all 5,000 tickets,” Frick said. “So we’re only selling 500 more [today] and they’ll be for a little extra.”

According to the event’s webpage, more people might be allowed in depending on how much parking is available, and if someone who has already purchased tickets needs only one more, additional tickets will be available for $7 at the gate. Parking at the Sports Park will be $5 per car.
