Accused lip-biter in court

NH woman, 22, released without bail, to return July 25

NEWBURYPORT — Jacquelyn Laurence, the New Hampshire woman accused of tearing off the bottom lip of a Newburyport man with her teeth last Friday, was released from custody yesterday after her appearance in Newburyport District Court.

The 22-year-old Derry, N.H., woman had been behind bars since her arrest early Friday morning on a single felony charge of mayhem. Laurence was held without bail pending the result of yesterday’s dangerousness hearing, which is meant to determine whether a person poses too great a risk to society or the victim to be afforded bail as the case proceeds through the court system.

At yesterday’s hearing inside the courthouse, Judge Allen Swan found Laurence dangerous, but allowed her to go free without bail until her next court appearance on July 25 for a probable cause hearing. As part of her release conditions, Laurence must remain drug and alcohol free with random screens, stay away and have no contact with her alleged victim, and attend substance abuse counseling. She was also given a bail warning.

Laurence, wearing a dark green T-shirt and featuring blue streaks in her blond hair, remained silent during her brief appearance in court yesterday. In the hours before her name was called, her attorney was seen conferring with Essex County prosecutor Maura Bailey.

At one point, Bailey brought her attorney and Newburyport police officers Charles Ferlauto and Megan Muldowney into an adjacent conference room. According to Bailey, the alleged victim was in the courthouse but had to leave before Laurence went before Judge Swan.

According to Ferlauto’s police report, about 1 a.m. on Friday he was dispatched to the corner of High and Winter streets in response to a report of a man bleeding. Ferlauto found the 26-year-old male with his lower lip maimed and bleeding badly.
