Man faces charges in abuse of 3-year-old

DA: Mom's boyfriend put hot sauce in child's mouth, taped it shut

DANVERS — The 3-year-old found alone inside an Extended Stay America hotel room in Danvers Tuesday afternoon was matter-of-fact as he explained the marks covering his body, police said.

The bruise that covered his calf? “Oh, Daddy hit me with a shoe.”

The black and blue marks on his side and buttocks? Those were from the leather belt used to punish him for being bad.

And the scratch across his cheek? He did that himself when he tried to pull the tape off of his mouth, he said.

Danvers police Patrolman Keith Chalmers asked the boy why there was tape on his mouth.

“Daddy put hot sauce in (my) mouth and then put tape over it,” the boy told him.

Christopher Delcid, 21, a Chelsea Housing Authority maintenance worker who is living with the boy’s mother and two other children in the hotel, is now being held on $250,000 cash bail, charged with assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury and child abandonment.

Delcid, who is not the boy’s biological father, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police are also seeking charges against the child’s mother, Katherine Rodriguez, for child abandonment and permitting injury to a child.

Prosecutor Lindsay Shaheen, who had asked for $100,000 bail in the case, called it “disturbing.”

Delcid’s attorney said the boy’s mother and Delcid had alternate explanations for the toddler’s injuries, though none for why he was left alone in a hotel room for an unknown period of time.

Danvers police were called to the hotel, which has been used by state officials to house homeless families, shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, after the front desk clerk got a call from Delcid’s sister, reporting the abuse.

Officers knocked at the door of Room 234 for several minutes. They could hear a television, but no one was answering, so they asked a manager to let them in.
