Illegal left turn results in heroin arrest

LAWRENCE — A Newburyport man was arrested Saturday morning and charged with possession of heroin and motor vehicle violations after a police officer saw a car make an illegal left turn onto Jack Street from Essex Street.

Police said Officer Claudio Camacho pulled his cruiser up behind the car in an attempt to pull it over about 11:14 a.m., but the car turned onto Common Street where it stopped at a pizza shop and the driver got out and ran.

The man ran onto the property at 35 Common St., and Camacho got back into his cruiser and pulled into the parking lot at 50 Common St., where three men had surrounded the suspect, later identified as Mark Gonzalo, 44, of 77 Lime St., Newburyport.

He had a small plastic bag of heroin in his mouth, which he did not want to swallow, and which police confiscated.

Gonzalo was charged with possession of heroin, disorderly conduct, trespassing, failure to stop for a police officer, driving without a license, and failure to obey a traffic sign at an intersection.
