This Day in History

On this day in 1879, America’s great emancipator, Newburyport-born, William Lloyd Garrison passed away. Today, residents can see his statue at the center of Brown Square and feel proud. However, not everyone in his hometown embraced his efforts until after the North’s successful Civil War victory.
