Bank foundation donates $5K to Kelleher Park playground

NEWBURYPORT — Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank’s Charitable Foundation has awarded a $5,000 grant for the grass-roots fundraising efforts for the building and ongoing maintenance of a new playground at Kelleher Park.

“Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, with this generous donation, has partnered with the playground collaborative to support and improve the quality of life for families within our community. And, make many children happy to have their playground back,” said Barbara Garnis of the Kelleher Park Playground Fund in a press release.

This community-based collaboration was spearheaded by the First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist, Central Congregational Church, Belleville Congregational Church and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.

This effort to build the playground has forged a unique community partnership among spiritual communities, Kelleher Park Tenant’s Association, Kelleher Park Learning Enrichment Center, Newburyport Housing Authority, financial institutions, private and nonprofit organizations and many individuals within the community.

In addition to the 45 children residing at Kelleher Park, the playground will be available to the children attending the Newburyport public schools who are eligible for, and potentially would participate in academic support and recreational programming offered by the Newburyport Learning Enrichment Center, which is on site at Kelleher Park.
