Teens injured in midday crash

SALISBURY — Five people, including three teenage girls, were injured yesterday after a multi-car crash on Bridge Road near Angelina’s sandwich shop. One car spun 360 degrees and another smashed into a parked car inside another business, according to local police.

All five victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Anna Jaques Hospital via a small fleet of ambulances. The northbound lane of Bridge Road was closed off at Stripers and traffic going southbound was backed up several hundred yards. In addition to local police and firefighters, three police chiefs, who were all in the area at the time — Salisbury Chief Tom Fowler, Newburyport City Marshal Thomas Howard and Amesbury Chief Kevin Ouellet — responded to the scene.

The disturbing chain of events began at 12:24 p.m. when Amber Poussard, 20, of Hampton, N.H., pulled out of Angelina’s parking lot and tried to take a left turn across the northbound lane. While doing so, Poussard struck a gray Honda sedan operated by Abigail Adams of Gardner. Adams was behind the wheel with three 13-year-old girls in the car.

The force of the collision sent Poussard’s sedan spinning 360 degrees before coming to a stop in the middle of Bridge Road. Adams’ car left Bridge Road entirely, plowing into a car parked inside Jim’s Auto Body, according to police.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Salisbury Detective Stephen Sforza said at the scene.

No charges have been filed, but police are continuing their investigation. That includes finding a tractor trailer that witnesses said was parked along the northbound side of Bridge Road near Angelina’s at the time of the crash, and may have limited Poussard’s vision as she attempted to merge into traffic, according to police.

Fowler said its appears the three teenagers were wearing seat belts. It is still under investigation whether the two drivers were wearing seat belts.
