SALISBURY — Kyle Mroz, a junior at UMass Amherst, is raising money for a volunteer trip to South Africa+++ this summer to help protect endangered animals and environments.
The 20-year-old Mroz, who is studying film and screenwriting, will spend four weeks restoring the deteriorating habitat and declining animal population following years of poor land practice and environmental devastation.
Under the leadership of the organization International Student Volunteers, Mroz will join others from around the globe in the program, which will be part volunteer and part of adventure travel.
The first two weeks will be spent volunteering to restore the wildlife enclosures and infrastructure, helping with daily care of cheetah, wild dogs, brown hyenas and vultures. The second half of the trip will feature an educational adventure tour through South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique.
"I have been supportive of protecting the environment and taking care of our planet, and through ISV, I now have a fun and exciting way to get involved," Mroz said in a release. "I love animals, and the opportunity to work alongside the amazing wildlife of Africa is one I couldn't let pass me by."
Mroz, a 2009 graduate of Amesbury High School who lives in Salisbury, leaves June 22 for South Africa. He must raise $5,000 for the trip by March 9. He is seeking donations.
