This day in history

On this day in 1861, the schooner Hebron, captained by Newburyporter Capt. George W. Jefts, was captured and sunk at Norfolk, Virginia, by the rebels. On Monday afternoon, May 6, the flag of the schooner that was not captured, was flung to the breeze over Merrimac Street bearing the words, “The flag was all that was saved from her.”
