Two seek to be Salisbury town moderator

SALISBURY — For the first time in years, there is a contested race for town moderator in Tuesday’s election. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Profiles of each of the two candidates seeking the position of moderator, who runs all Town Meetings, are below.

Jerry Klima

Age: 69

Address: Second Street

Years living year-round in Salisbury: 14

Occupation: Retired corporate attorney

Education: Bachelor’s from Harvard University; law degree from Harvard Law School.

Current/past offices held: Salisbury selectman, nine years; Planning Board, three years; chairman Affordable Housing Trust, Zoning Review Committee and Economic Development Committee.

Knowledge of parliamentary procedure, needed to run Town Meetings: “I’ve used Roberts Rules of Order in my practice as a corporate attorney many times, and have acted as an adviser to my clients in stockholders meetings, where Roberts Rules of Order apply.”

Klima added that he feels his experiences at those stockholders meetings give him a good understanding of the role of moderator.

Reasons for running for office: “I’d like to continue to serve the people of the town of Salisbury.”

Ronalee Ray-Parrott

Age: 45

Address: Lafayette Road

Years living year-round in Salisbury: 31

Occupation: School social worker at North Shore Consortium

Education: Bachelor’s North Adams State College (currently Mass. Liberal Arts College); Master’s, University of South Carolina.

Current/past offices held: Salisbury Parks and Recreation Commission, chairwoman; Affordable Housing Trust and Housing Partnership.

Knowledge of parliamentary procedure, needed to run Town Meetings: “I have been chair of many committees over the years, and used Roberts Rules of Order to run those meetings. I was chairwoman of the Juvenile Justice Prevention Committee for eight years and Parks and Recreation Commission for four years.”

Reasons for running for office: “I’m running because it’s always been a dream of mine to be town moderator ever since my dad was first elected to the office when I was 15 years old. That’s how we grew up, to be involved in our communities, and I have always loved being involved in the communities I’ve lived in. “
