This Day in History

On this day in 1898, The Safford Brothers, William and Edward of Newburyport, reached their destination of Dawson, Alaska, after a four month journey. They left their families in Newburyport in hopes of striking rich in the small Alaska town, where gold had recently been discovered. Unfortunately, both were unsuccessful and returned a year later, both poorer and wiser than when they had left.
