Merrimac Senior Center Activities

MERRIMAC — The following special activities for May “Older Americans Month will be held at the Senior Center, 100 East Main St.:

Summertime Tea: Summertime … and the living was easy for many at the turn of the last century. The beaches offered amusements for both the rich and poor alike. People enjoyed dancing, vaudeville shows, bandstand concerts, the latest rides and other entertainments. Join “Mrs. Gordon” on May 16 at 2 p.m. as she gives a first-hand account of what it was like to spend a day at the beach in 1908. Tea, punch and refreshments will be served. There is no charge; sign up in advance.

Donaghue School Chorus: The student chorus of Donahue School will be performing on Tuesday, May 20, at 11:30 followed by lunch.

40th Anniversary and Older Americans Day Celebration: Come and enjoy this special day with surprises all day, luncheon with entertainment. Sign up for lunch in advance.

‘Gen Silent’: A special screening of the critically acclaimed documentary, “Gen Silent,” at the Merrimac Library, May 28, 6 p.m. What would you do if you were old, disabled and being discriminated or hated for your sexual preference? This film uncovers the effects of oppression before Stonewall now affects older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people with fear and isolation.

Chief’s Breakfast, May 26: Join us for a fabulous breakfast on May 26 at 8:30 a.m. followed by information sharing from town department heads, legislators, assistant superintendent from Essex County Sheriff’s Department and many others. The breakfast is free; sign up in advance.

Low Vision Support Group: Police Chief Eric Shears will be discussing concerns and safety issues for people living with low vision on Tuesday, May 13, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Merrimac Senior Center. Transportation will be available by calling 978-346-9549. Sign up in advance.


Day trips: Mystic Aquarium and Seaport on May 18, Boston Pops on June 7, The Temptations — Live in Concert, June 11, Newport 2014 Flower Show on June 28. Other trips include touring the Boston Harbor Islands on Saturday, July 26; and Boston Strong: Red Sox with Duck Tour and Sam Adams Tour on Sept. 8.
