This Day in Newburyport

On this day in 1941, the Boston Globe published a photograph of Newburyport’s “bad boy mayor” Bossy Gillis recording a campaign speech from the Essex County Prison Farm for broadcasting on Salem radio station WESX. The three-time mayor was in jail serving a nine-month sentence for criminal libel.
