---- — NEWBURYPORT — The second season of the Newburyport Winter Farmers Market is set to launch Sunday at 9 a.m. at The Tannery Marketplace event tent at 50 Water St.
Newburyport’s market is touted as the only winter farmers market on the North Shore. Organizers say winter markets are the next step in the local food movement, creating a year-round marketplace for area farmers to offer locally grown produce, meats and cheese.
The Newburyport Winter Farmers Market will be held twice a month from December through March 2013. The dates are Sundays, Dec. 9 and 23, Jan. 6 and 20, Feb. 3 and 17 and March 3 and 17. The hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Held in a heated tent, the winter market will feature many of the local communities’ favorite farms from the summer season, including Wolf Meadow Farm in Rowley featuring locally crafted Italian-style cheese, John Crow Farm in Groton offering local pastured-raised poultry, grass-fed beef and specialty meats; and Heron Pond Farm in South Hampton and Middle Earth Farm in Amesbury bringing sustainably grown vegetables to market. New vendors will join the market in January.
Additionally, Newburyport’s winter market will feature vendors offering prepared foods and unique handmade local crafts.
There will be live music every Sunday. Michael Bernier will kick off the winter season with his soul-felt, roots rock and roll music with a positive vibe.
The Newburyport Farmers Market is sponsored by Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank and Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.
Representatives of Anna Jaques Hospital will be on hand the first market of each month with tips and information on health and well-being. The Newburyport Bank will have a food drop-off box at its market table in support of area service agencies.
