World-caliber pumpkin catapult headed to annual fall festival

AMESBURY — A world championship pumpkin catapult will be among the entries displaying their power at Coastal Connection’s third annual Pumpkin Chucking Fest on Sunday, Oct 14, at Amesbury Sports Park, 12 South Hunt Road.

The catapult — known as Mischief Knight — was built by Chip Hersey and Perry Stone, who placed second in the world championship pumpkin chucking competition in 2009.

The Mischief Knight team will use this year’s Amesbury festival to practice their chucking techniques in preparation for the 2012 world championship in November, which will be aired on the Discovery Channel on Thanksgiving night.

People of all ages are invited to see the catapult in action as it chucks pumpkins to the top of the sports park’s hill.

The Amesbury Pumpkin Chucking Fest is a free, fall, family festival featuring live music, kids games, bouncy house, small petting zoo, face painting, silent auction and raffles with prizes that include two seats to the Patriots-Dolphins game on Dec. 30.

In addition, Coastal Connections will be holding a Craft Fair this year inside the sports park building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Food and beverages, including the famous cider donuts from Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury, will be for sale throughout the day as well.

In the event of rain, all activities will be moved inside the sports park, while the pumpkin catapulting continues outside.

Coastal Connections is a non-profit organization

The old-fashioned-type festival is a partnership that brings together the business community, local residents and people with disabilities. It is sponsored by Merrimac Tool/Kramer Scientific in Amesbury, with all proceeds benefiting programs and activities at the Amesbury-based Coastal Connections. The nonprofit organization supports people with disabilities in the community by crafting personalized programs that promote living, working and playing in the local community as well as advocacy and supports, allowing them to achieve their full potential.
