From eye screenings to 'house' building, activities for all

Life lesson of the day: When you go away for a long weekend, always be prepared for an avalanche of email when you return.

Evidently there’s a lot going on in Amesbury this week. I’ve got an inbox full of entries to share and 700 words to share it. Let’s call this the lightning round. Ready? Let’s do this.

The Amesbury Council on Aging and the Amesbury Lions Club will be offering free eye screenings for adults through an Eye Mobile program at the Senior Center Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Specifically, the Eye Mobile will provide measurements of blood pressure, visual acuity, refractive error, eye pressure and ocular photography to detect cataracts, retinal disease and optic nerve disease.

Appointments are requested but not required, and interested patrons can call the Senior Center at 978-388-8138 to set up an appointment.

It’s not too late to register to vote. The deadline to register for November’s general election is Wednesday, Oct. 17. This is the big one, so be sure to register at City Hall if you haven’t already.

Also, in case you hadn’t heard, the November elections will be held at Amesbury High School, not City Hall, in order to accommodate what is expected to be a very high volume of voters throughout the day.

Ten local homeowners living on the Point Shore will open their doors on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the annual Point Shore House Tour. All proceeds of the event will go toward preserving Union Congregational Church, and boxed lunches and transportation will be available for participants during the tour.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at or at the Union Congregational Church and Lowell’s Boat Shop the day of the tour.
