Fund to be created for accident victim's funeral

MERRIMAC -- In the hours following the tragic death of a young Amesbury man early Sunday morning, a make-shift memorial has emerged, marking the place where police say he crashed his red Yamaha motorcycle.

Jeffrey Gilbert, 23, was pronounced dead at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport after Merrimac firefighters and police, and Amesbury paramedics responded to the horrific site located off Hadley Road, a remote stretch of road near the New Hampshire border.

Merrimac police Chief Eric Shears said the crash is still under investigation by local officers David Vance and Adam White and a state police accident reconstruction team, which is trying to determine if speed played a factor. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and Gilbert was wearing a helmet.

“A very tragic situation for the family of the young man,” Shears said yesterday.

Merrimac police said an emergency call was placed at 12:40 a.m. reporting the accident in the area of 37 Hadley Road. The road runs from the New Hampshire border to the western end of Merrimac, through sparsely populated neighborhoods.

Friends of Gilbert, a 2008 graduate of Whittier Regional Technical High School, are in process of organizing a fundraiser to help pay for burial expenses. In the meantime, friends also took to Facebook to relay their thoughts and send their prayers to his family and girlfriend.

A phone message left with the family was not immediately returned.
