---- — NEWBURY — Plum Island, long considered a picturesque retreat, just received a colorful upgrade.

More than a dozen residents yesterday brought in planters and dozens of flowers and bushes to the commercial parking lot at Plum Island Center to enhance the look of part of the popular seaside destination.

“We wanted to do something for the island,” said Lynne Petty, who heads a Plum Island beautification group.

“There was a lot of negativity surrounding the erosion this spring that we thought we’d do something to make this part of the island look fresh and colorful.”

Petty’s group got permission from parking-lot owner Dave Williamson, and for months has been raising money for the project.

They received support from Verne Fisher at Visionary Landscapes LLC, Newbury, and Marc Bolcome of Wolf Hill Nursery, Ipswich.

She said her group will attempt to continue its work by providing flowers and foliage to nearby PITA Hall and perhaps Plum Island Point.

But the central parking lot was their first stop.

“This lot is passed by so many people that we wanted to improve its appearance with some colorful flowers,” said Petty.
