Programs at Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats

---- — NEWBURYPORT — Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, One Plum Island Turnpike, is a natural history education and visitor center that is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and Monday holidays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mass Audubon members receive discounts on programs. Call 978-462-9998 for information about additional programs and events or visit www.massaudubon.org/joppaflats.

Activities and outings meet at the education center unless otherwise noted.

SATURDAY MORNING BIRDING

Join our experienced leaders in a search for avian activity in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. For beginners and birders of all skill levels.

Saturday, Nov. 3, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Fee: $10 adults, $7 children ages 8 and up. No registration required.

THE WONDER AND THE WOW: A WALK AT ROUGH MEADOWS

Family educator Lisa Hutchings takes adults to investigate the oak islands and salt marshes at Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary in Rowley.

Saturday, Nov. 3, 9:30 a.m. to noon. Meet at Rough Meadows off 1A in Rowley. Fee: $27. Registration required.

SUNDAY BIRDING IN THE NEWBURYPORT/PLUM ISLAND AREA

Visit the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Merrimack River, Salisbury Beach State Reservation and other very productive sites in Newbury and Rowley to observe migrating seabirds, ducks and land birds.

Sunday, Nov. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $39. Registration required.

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE: FALL FOLIAGE AND SALT MARSHES OF ROUGH MEADOWS

Joppa Flats teacher Lisa Hutchings takes families to the oak islands and salt marshes of Rowley’s Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary. For families with children ages 7 to 11.

WEDNESDAY EVENING LECTURE: EPIC JOURNEYS — SHOREBIRDS

Naturalist, photographer and videographer Shawn Carey uses visuals to talk about the epic journeys of shorebirds.

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fee: $4. Registration not required.

HOME-SCHOOL STUDY SESSION: LIFE IN THE OCEAN

Monthly focus topics for home-schoolers, ages 7 to 12, each with an on-site study session and a field trip, led by Lisa Hutchings. (Field trip to Gloucester Maritime Heritage Museum on Nov. 15.)

Thursday, Nov. 8, noon to 2:30 p.m. Fee: $17. Registration required.

PARENT/CHILD WALKABOUT: RUN, GATHER & HIDE AT MAUDSLAY STATE PARK

Come outside with Lisa Hutchings to explore the ecology, sights and sounds of the local habitats as the group looks for critters at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. A fun, energetic format for families with children ages 3 to 6. The fee covers one adult and one child.
