It’s been an arduous two-year process, but a new DownRiver Ice Cream stand is tentatively set to open in Rowley on Friday. The new shop on Route 1, just south of the Agawam Diner, is the second location for owners Joe and Amy Ahearn of Ipswich. They have operated DownRiver Ice Cream in Essex for the last five years.
The Ahearns pride themselves on providing ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbets that use only the finest natural ingredients. All their products, which include more than 30 flavors and regional specialties like Green Head, Mill River Mix and Hog Island, are made at their Essex location.
Local students from Triton, Georgetown and Ipswich have already been hired to work at the Rowley location and are currently training at the Essex stand.
“We have a phenomenal group of kids that are training and will be ready on opening day to run with it,” said Ahearn.
When asked about all the competition in the area, such as the new Peachwave Yogurt location, White Farms, Dairy Queen and the like, Ahearn said, “We have a cult-like following in Essex and they have been begging for us to open a place in Rowley.”
Early in the season, DownRiver Ice Cream will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m., but as the weather warms up (after Memorial Day), the shop will be open seven days a week from noon to 9 p.m. into the early fall.
Herrick Farm at 77 Dodge Road and Mehaffey Farm at 179 Newbury Road are now accepting reservations for their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), where each week they provide fresh produce from their farms. Full shares and half shares are available and average out to cost about $30 a week.
Shares might include lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and onions in the early summer to pumpkins, squash and watermelon in late summer.
