This day in history

On this day in 1837, the whale ship Merrimack arrived in Newburyport from her second voyage with 1,300 barrels of spermaceti and 1,600 barrels of whale oil. The profits from this and subsequent voyages were so poor, however, that the company decided to sell its ships and abandon the enterprise.
