This Day in History

On this day in 1870, native-born George Wood passed away. Wood had an interesting and varied career which included working for the war department in Washington D.C., after which he held a position in the Treasury Department. Later, Wood turned to writing and published dozens of works during a three-decade period. During his final years, Wood was a frequent contributor to The Newburyport Herald under the pseudonym “Peter Schlemihl.”
