Synagogue starts monthly food pantry

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — A new community service initiative is beginning next month at Congregation Ahavas Achim. Members of the synagogue are spearheading a new monthly food pantry and social hour.

Starting on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m., the Jewish community will open its doors on a monthly basis to those in need throughout the Greater Newburyport area.

“The central frustration of the great biblical prophets is the inability of the average person to translate their ethical ideals into action,” Rabbi Avi Poupko said. “This initiative is our attempt to overcome this all too common human failing and actually make a real difference in our community in the most tangible way possible.”

The program will consist of hors d’oeuvres, hot chocolate and freshly brewed coffee, as well as card games and trivia. There will also be plenty of packaged foods for folks to take home. In addition, a “wish box” will be available for individuals to request specific items. Members of the synagogue will try to meet these requests.

This effort is being supported by a grant provided by the Institution for Savings Charitable Foundation and through contributions by synagogue members. Contact for more information.
