Intro to meditation class offered

The Insight Meditation Center of Newburyport will offer a six-week class entitled “An Introduction to Insight Meditation.” The class is designed for anyone interested in learning Insight Meditation (Vipassana). Vipassana is a simple practice that steadies the mind by grounding attention in the present moment; it originated in the Buddhist tradition more than 2,500 years ago. Class begins Thursday, Sept. 19, from 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $114. For registration information, visit www.imcnewburyport.org.

Mom to Mom at Hope Community

Mom to Mom is designed for all moms (of all ages, grandmothers, too) and will meet every other Tuesday morning, 9:30-11:30, at Hope Community Church beginning in September through May 2014. There will be a special brunch on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 9:30 a.m. at Hope to begin the season. It is the goal of Mom to Mom to educate, encourage and equip women for the most important job in all the world — parenting. Registration is $50 per mom and includes a workbook and child care (newborn through preschool age). For more, contact the church office, 978-463-4673 or email: hope@hopenewburyport.com. The church is located at 11 Hale St. in Newburyport.

Men’s Bible Group at St. James

The Men’s Group at St. James Episcopal Church, 120 Main St., Amesbury, meets each Saturday to read aloud and discuss appointed selections in the Holy Bible and related resources. They learn about the circumstances of biblical events, their significance and the people involved.

Currently the focus is upon appointed readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, which is the Protestant Christian Worship Schedule of Bible readings that takes into account daily services and the liturgical year’s observances of festivals and seasons.

The customary meeting place is the St. James Parish’s Chandler Hall. Call Arthur Yarranton at 978-346-4749 (arthuryarranton@yahoo.com) or Mort Gilbert at 978-388-3831 (mortgilbert@comcst.net) for further information.
