This Day in History

On this day in 1824, The Marquis de Lafayette, who was critical in America gaining its independence from Britain, passed through Newbury and onto Newburyport. He arrived late in the evening in a heavy downpour. The next day, thousands went to see him and were grateful for the chance to grasp the hand of the man who came to our rescue.
