Joslin named board director of building officials group

---- — NEWBURY — Building commissioner and Facilities manager Sam Joslin was recently selected to serve as board director for the Massachusetts Federation of Building Officials.

The MFBO is considered an “umbrella organization” that represents the state’s city and town building commissioners and local inspectors, all of whom belong to one or more of the three regional professional associations: the Massachusetts Building Commissioners and Inspectors Association, the Southeastern Massachusetts Building Official Association and the Building Officials of Western Massachusetts.

According to its mission statement, the role of the MFBO is to increase public awareness of the critical role building officials play in ensuring public safety and to advocate for responsible and reasonable building code development. The organization also participates in the legislative process from time to time as it pertains to the profession or to public safety.

“The federation is the collective voice of building officials,” said Joslin. He notes that although technically part of the Department of Public Safety — along with police and fire personnel — building officials are seldom viewed in that role.

“Our job is to be preventers of public safety hazards in buildings and because we are proactive rather than reactive as a group, we tend to be invisible to the public,” he said.

“The general public has an expectation that the buildings they enter — schools, restaurants, theaters, etc. — are safe for them and their children to occupy. So if the building is safe and nothing happens, we have done our jobs.”

As board director, Joslin’s goals will be to “continue to advocate for a consistent and reasonable building code that protects the public and to promote awareness of the Inspector’s role as a needed public safety official.”

In other news from Town Hall, Newbury assessor Michelle Branciforte recently received the designation of Massachusetts Association of Assessing Officer. Her certification will be officially presented at the MAAO Fall Conference held at the Publick House in Sturbridge in October.

“I’m very proud of what our team has been able to accomplish as of late,” said Town Administrator Tracy Blais.
