Newburyport Daily News
---- — On this day in 1890, Charles Decie of Newburyport was murdered aboard the steamship called the John Brooks. He boarded the steamship, destined for Portsmouth, and never returned home. A few weeks later, a body was recovered in shore waters that matched the description of the young man and an autopsy revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and not drowning.
